One of the pillars on which our project rests is longevity. Indeed, this can be considered one of the most trending topics today, receiving growing attention from professionals and the general population alike. Although we have already approached this topic from various angles, I would like to revisit it today because, as it becomes more popular, a significant number of different professionals are naturally emerging, offering services related to this field.
There are qualified and reasonable people; others are just dreamers and naive about the physiology of human aging, thinking that all experiments on knockout mice should immediately be extrapolated to humans; and then there are some more hardcore individuals about whom we wouldn't be surprised if, in a few years, a Netflix series like Wild, Wild Country is made. As doctors, we have the privilege of having an academic foundation that provides us with greater ease in studying this subject and, consequently, applying the knowledge in our daily practice. Additionally, we have a central relationship with our patients in our activities, and they often seek out a medical professional as their central point of contact when they are concerned about their health in terms of longevity.
However, despite the medical profession's tendency to isolate itself over the years, we now live in a time of growing intervention by professionals from various fields in health, and longevity has been a prime example of this. Longevity encompasses topics as diverse as physical exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress management, among many others. Therefore, it is increasingly necessary to have professionals such as sports physiologists, nutritionists, sleep specialists and psychologists, for example, to work with those seeking to increase or maintain their quality of life over time. We, as doctors, hold a favorable position from which we can serve as a unifying link for all these areas of intervention, but we should not try to play all the instruments. Above all, we must use this position and strengthen it with knowledge and competence, always seeking to surround ourselves with professionals who share the same principles.
