Collaborating with companies often brings us face-to-face with a problem that affects many workers: the need to be reachable almost 24 hours a day. The pandemic, with the transition of many workers to remote work, has intensified this issue. Even before it, due to the availability of various digital communication channels, there were contacts outside of regular working hours. However, after this significant event for humanity, the shift to working from home has blurred the boundaries of these working hours. Consequently, not only is there an expectation that a worker who hasn’t marked themselves as "in a meeting" on their professional communication platform is available to respond to any request, but it has also become common to send messages/emails during late hours. The first situation alone disregards a basic rule that is typically observed when someone is physically at their workplace: there are designated start and end times. Workers are compensated for these hours, and their duties are expected to be performed within this time frame. The second scenario is worse because, even though the sender usually doesn’t expect an immediate response, it contributes to a constant anxiety of "fear of missing out" (FOMO). Workers may feel pressured to be on alert as soon as they wake up. Often, those in positions of power may not consider this, as it can be deeply embedded in the company culture. However, it is crucial for them to be aware of this issue and avoid promoting such behaviors. Subordinates often hesitate to address the situation out of fear of being misunderstood. Nonetheless, they should clarify the rules from the outset if possible. If they haven’t, they should try to discuss the matter with their superiors. Contrary to what one might initially think, working outside regular hours is seldom effective. Preserving buffer zones will help improve performance in the workplace.
