Last week, our team attended the Longevity Health Summit, held in the capital of our country, Lisbon. It was an excellent opportunity to engage with professionals from around the world dedicated to this field (according to the organization, people from 35 different nationalities were present) and assess the current state of this area from various perspectives. As physicians, our primary interests were the scientific updates; however, part of the summit's program was also directed towards areas such as hospitality, which has been partnering with this scientific field to provide premium experiences to clients seeking this combination.
This made me wonder about the different perspectives currently focusing on the longevity domain, as this theme was also addressed in one of the congress panels.
Indeed, the longevity field has become more mainstream in terms of media dissemination and interest from the general population, in recent years. However, while many of the everyday things each of us can do are free or low-cost, the reality is that access to a higher level tends to be more expensive.
The use of appropriate wearables, access to appointments, and certain health exams, for example, require some financial investment.
We acknowledge this. In our case, we always strive to ensure that this corresponds to a high degree of rigor; knowledge transmission; time investment; personal dedication to clients; and high-level results. At the same time, the luxury market undoubtedly has a place in this longevity domain. Programs that combine targeted interventions with luxury wellness components, for example, make sense and have a specific target audience that should not be overlooked. However, it is essential that one is not synonymous with the other, as it may sometimes seem to those not familiar with this world. It is important to continue disseminating the principles of longevity that can be applied by everyone; to foster widespread interest in this topic; to offer excellent services with a monetary value appropriate to that excellence; and to leave some room for luxury offerings, too. But we need to be sure that this is only a branch of this domain and not its core business making longevity a difficult-to-access commodity. Have a great week! João Pedro Neto, MD
